Apple's App Store turns 10
Last July 10th the Apple App Store turned 10 years old.
The App Store is one of the inventions that most they have contributed to changing the habits and behaviors of tens of millions of people, at the same time giving life to a new slice of the global economy which in 2018 could surpass that of the film industry in terms of turnover.
There are 2.2 million apps present on the store. From its launch to today, total downloads have been 170 billion and users have spent 130 billion dollars on apps from 2010 to today.
In 2017, users made 30.5 billion downloads from the App store and spent 42.4 billion dollars on Apps, according to data provided by App Annie, and is worth 30% of global App downloads. The comparison with Google Play the latter stands out in terms of downloads which accounts for 70% of the total. From the point of view of turnover, however, is Apple again in the lead with more double that of its opponent Google.
App Annie's forecasts say that in 2022 the annual spending of users on the Apple App market will be of 75.7 billion dollars, marking an increase of 80%.
Among the most popular apps downloaded in the world from the Apple App Store in first place is Facebook, with 29.4 million downloads. In second position we find the app from the same giant Facebook Messenger; while in third position is YouTube, the first app in the ranking of the Google group. Two other apps from the group founded by Zuckerberg that we know well were just off the podium: Instagram and WhatsApp. In sixth position again is an application from the Big G group: Google Maps.
Over the last ten years, the App Store has created a place where we can find the ideal application for practically everything we do and has given life to a new economy made up of software, offering developers from all over the world a new opportunity and a global stage on which to showcase their own creativity.
